Elevating Your Kitchen with Lighting: A Guide to Ambient, Task, and Accent Options

Lighting is one of the most powerful tools in kitchen design, and yet it’s often the most overlooked. You can have the most beautiful cabinetry, the finest countertop materials, and a thoughtfully planned layout—but if the lighting isn’t right, the space simply won’t function or feel the way it should.

I design lighting in three layers: ambient, task, and accent. Each one plays a distinct role. When they work together, they give your kitchen depth, warmth, and versatility.

Ambient Lighting: Setting the Tone

• What Is Ambient Lighting?

Ambient lighting is your kitchen’s foundation. It provides general, overall illumination that fills the space and makes it feel welcoming. I use it to eliminate dark zones and ensure a comfortable level of brightness throughout the room.

• How I Use It in My Designs

In the Great Neck kitchen, I used recessed LED fixtures in a grid layout to distribute soft, even light across the ceiling. In Cold Spring Harbor, natural light and recessed lights worked together to create a bright, open kitchen from sunrise to sunset.

• Ambient Lighting Tips

  • Use evenly spaced recessed lights.
  • Install dimmers for flexible mood control.
  • Incorporate natural light where possible.
  • Stick with warm-white bulbs (2700K–3000K).

Task Lighting: Function With Purpose

• What Is Task Lighting?

Task lighting focuses on the places where you need clear, direct light—like prep zones, sinks, stoves, and islands.

• Where I Install It

I always include under-cabinet lighting for prep areas. In Port Washington, we used slim LED strips to illuminate the quartz counters. For islands, I prefer pendants that provide both style and function. In Nesconset, industrial-style pendants delivered sharp light while enhancing the overall design.

• Task Lighting Tips

  • Use under-cabinet lights for all main prep zones.
  • Choose pendants that suit your style and provide clear light.
  • Use 3000K–3500K bulbs for detail work.
  • Don’t forget recessed lighting over sinks and inside pantries.

Accent Lighting: Style, Depth, and Warmth

• What Is Accent Lighting?

Accent lighting creates mood and highlights design features like glass cabinetry, open shelving, and textured surfaces.

• How I Use It

In Roslyn Estates, we used interior cabinet lighting to spotlight crystal glassware. In Upper Brookville, a sculptural chandelier over the breakfast nook added softness and sophistication. Accent lighting adds layers and makes a space feel custom.

• Accent Lighting Tips

  • Highlight display cabinets or feature areas.
  • Use toe-kick lights or uplighting for subtle drama.
  • Select fixtures that complement your overall aesthetic.
  • Use dimmable LEDs to control the effect.

The Power of Layered Lighting

• How I Tie It All Together

By combining all three lighting types, I create a space that feels intentional, inviting, and functional at every hour of the day.

In every project, I map out a lighting plan that’s just as detailed as the cabinetry or layout. Whether it's morning prep or evening entertaining, lighting is what gives a kitchen its soul.
